At the beggining of the series, Saya is an ordinary highschool student, part of the track and field club, and likes to eat a lot while hanging out with her best friend. Another part of Saya's life is her loving family, made up by her adoptive father George Miyagusuku and her two adoptive brothers, Kai and Rikku. While her life seems to be normal and seemingly carefree, Saya often wonders about the fact that she cannot remember anything prior to the year she has been living with her adoptive family.

Saya's peaceful life begins to shatter when a strange melody she overhears in the street, makes her have flashbacks which make up a strange memory, a memory she can't understand but feels its important. The melody comes from a mysterious cellist who later on appears to have the keys to her forgotten past once she faces the horrible monsters, the chiroptera (yokushu). The mysterious man, Hagi, hands Saya a katana (japanese sword) and asks her to fight, but Saya does not understand why, and her fear is stronger than her will to fight. But Saya must fight or die, and a bloody kiss gives her the strength she never imagined she had. Saya then learns that she has the power to kill these awful beasts, simply with a few drops of her blood.

This first battle triggers her memories, memories which are made up of horrible flashbacks of an old Vietnam and the death of many people. As the chiroptera attacks continue, Saya begins to be involved in the fight as she aids "Red Shield" an organization whose purpose is to fight and hunt down the fearsome chiroptera. As she continues to fight, her skills and her memories begin to return, and Saya's conflict begins, what must she do? Who is she really? Why must she kill? Answers come, but not as easily as she would have wanted. Though Saya wishes to return to her happy life, she realizes that is not really possible.

The face of her true enemy is revealed, a face she knows too well. Once Saya's past is revealed completely, she suffers through so many losses and sacrifices. Knowing who she is does not bring her the comfort she had been looking for, but quite the opposite, and the only thing that keeps her going is the hope that it will all end someday and the people she has fought so hard to protect may finally live a happy and full life. But will she really do what she has set out to do, even at the cost of her life? Will her blood prevail?
