Saya is a young highschool student who lives a peaceful life with her adoptive family, despite the fact that she has no memories prior to the year she has spent with them. During her time in Okinawa, Saya is nowhere near violence or hatred, she is always surrounded by love and affection. But all this is not meant to last.
Her happy life shatters in an instant, and grief, fear and confussion become a part of her life instead. Saya has a hard time understanding why she has to fight the monsters that have suddenly appeared, why her blood is the only thing that can kill them. Her only wishes are that her family is safe, and that no one else is hurt. Saya decides to fight in honor of her father, even though she still doesn't understand why. Hope and courage are what fires her will to fight, which is often tested and reduced to the point where she cannot fight anymore.
Upon discovering who she really is, Saya understands why she must fight, even if it is at the expense of her own life. Knowing who she is, becomes a burden to her, a burden she wishes will come to an end soon enough. But she forgets that her life is no longer only hers, it also belongs to the many people who have come to love and care for her.
Saya is a character who is constantly in confusion, torn between what's is good and what's wrong. Must she choose to survive or to die? During the entire series, she finds many questions whose answers turn out to be something she did not expect and sometimes shatters her will. She realizes she has this violent side, a dark side difficult to control, but she fights hard to always be the sweet and loving Saya that everyone has come to know, who's only wish is to return to the happy life she used to have.
