Saya's mission is to defeat the chiropterans that have been risen rapidly.
What are chiroptera? Chiroptera (Yokushu) are beings with the appearance of a monster. They feed on blood, but unlike your regular vampire, those "infected" loose their will and have no memory of who they were. They become blood thirsty monsters. For some reason, Saya's blood is deadly when it comes in contact with chiroptera.
But there are also other types of chiroptera. The most dangerous kind are the ones that have kept their human appearance, chevalier. A chevalier (knight) serves their master with complete loyalty and admiration, their whole lives are dedicated to the protection of their master. They are extremely powerful and are born when they drink the blood of a pure blooded chiropteran. There are also the Schiff, artificially made chiropterans which also keep a human like appearance, but unlike chevaliers, they cannot stand the sun, and can only live for a short time.

Since Saya's blood is the only thing that can kill chiroptera, she is aided by a special tool, a unique japanese sword. Why is it unique? The sword's blade has this curve that goes from the handle and down. From this curve, is a narrow row that goes down to the tip of the sword. When Saya battles against a chiropteran, she cuts her hand on the curve and her blood travels along the narrow rows as veins that carry her blood and cover the sword's blade completely, thus making every cut deadly for the chiropteran.
The sword is always carried by Hagi in his cello case, and is handed to Saya during battle. Originally it has a bluish handle, and is later changed for a reddish one. A red shield is also added later on in honor of Saya's father, George.
