Abel Nightroad is the main character in Trinity Blood. He is a traveling priest who serves the Vatican as one of its representatives. But his true identity is that of a member of a special division called AX who is under the control of Cardenal Caterina Sforza.

Abel is at first glance a very gentle and kind human being, extremely clumsy and cheerful and always willing to help those in need. He usually gets lost very easily and is always out of money, which is one of the many reasons why he is always extremely hungry. But beneath that adorable exterior something else lies beneath. Abel is in fact one of the 4 experimental subjects (Abel, Cain, Seth, Lilith) created as a result of an experiment during the Mars Colonization Project. He is a Crusnik, a vampire who feeds on the blood of other vampires and who possess immense power and destructive potential, basically invincible. Crusniks are infused with nanomachines in their body, Abel only releases a smart porcentage of these in order to fight and only uses it over this limit he has set in very unique ocassions.

The continuing struggle between humans and Methuselah (vampires) eventually led to "Armageddon," the apocalyptic event that happened 900 years before the start of the story. During the war, Cain went insane and killed Lilith. In grief, Abel took her body to the Vatican where she was buried. Abel remained at her side, weeping for her, for 900 years. Abel makes a vow to protect humans which is when he meets Caterina at a very young age after an awful attack was done upon her family by a group of vampires. From my point of view, Lilith's death created a great change in Abel since he at first loathed humans and had taken the side of the Methuselah in the war while Lilith the human's.

Another turning point for Abel is when one of the members of AX, Noelle, is killed, this deeply shocks him and his attitude changes a lot with him being less cheerful but always remaining kind. After this we encounter the source of Abel's sorrow and pain, Cain. Abel had believed Cain was dead after he and Seth had thrown him to earth from space, but he had survived. So it becomes Abel's mission to find him and destroy him at last.
